Buick-Special

The Buick Special was a model of automobile produced by the Buick division of General Motors from 1936 to 1958. It was the entry-level Buick, and was the predecessor to the Skylark. The Special was the first model to be offered with the new Fireball straight-eight engine, and was available in a variety of body styles, from a two-door sedan to a four-door station wagon.

The Special was first introduced in 1936 as a two-door sedan, and was the first Buick to feature the new Fireball straight-eight engine. This engine was designed to provide more power and smoother operation than the previous Buick engines. The Fireball was a single overhead camshaft design, and was offered in two different displacements, either 248.4 or 320.2 cubic inches. The engine was mated to a three-speed manual transmission.

In 1937, the Special was redesigned and the Fireball engine was enlarged to 263.9 cubic inches. This engine was mated to a three-speed manual transmission, or an optional four-speed manual. The four-speed was available with either a column-mounted or floor-mounted shifter.

The Special was also available in a variety of body styles, including a two-door sedan, four-door sedan, two-door coupe, four-door station wagon, and a two-door convertible. All models were available with a variety of trim levels, including the base Special, the DeLuxe, and the Super.

The Special was updated again in 1941, with a slightly revised body style and the addition of a new overhead valve engine, the Fireball Dynaflash. This engine was available in either 248.4 or 320.2 cubic inches, and was mated to either a three-speed manual or a four-speed manual transmission. The four-speed was available with either a column-mounted or floor-mounted shifter.
