Aston Martin-Nimrod Racing Aston Martin (racing car)

The Aston Martin Nimrod racing car is a classic example of British engineering excellence. Built in the late 1970s, the Nimrod was designed to compete in the World Endurance Championship, a series of long-distance races held across Europe and North America. The car was an instant success, winning its first race in 1979 and going on to become one of the most successful British-built racing cars of all time.

The Nimrod was the brainchild of British motorsport legend David Brown, who had previously been involved in the development of the iconic Aston Martin DB4 and DB5 models. Brown wanted to create a car that would be able to compete with the likes of the Porsche 935 and Ferrari 312. He approached the Italian firm of Vignale to build the chassis and engine, and the result was a lightweight, mid-engined two-seater that was capable of reaching speeds of over 200mph.

The Nimrod’s engine was a 3.0-litre V8, producing around 500bhp. This power was sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, giving the car an impressive power-to-weight ratio. The Nimrod was also equipped with an aerodynamic body kit, which included a large rear wing and a wide front splitter.

The car’s debut race was the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it finished a respectable fifth place. It went on to compete in several other endurance races, including the 1000km of Monza and the 1000km of Spa-Francorchamps. The Nimrod was also entered in the World Endurance Championship, where it finished third in the 1981 season.

The Nimrod was retired from racing in 1983, but it remains an iconic example of British motorsport engineering. Its success in endurance racing and its distinctive styling have made it a favourite among classic car enthusiasts. The car is still in demand today, with examples regularly appearing at classic car auctions.

The Aston Martin Nimrod is a classic example of British engineering excellence. Its success in endurance racing, distinctive styling and timeless appeal make it one of the most desirable classic cars on the market. Whether you’re a fan of classic British racing cars, or just appreciate the beauty of a classic Aston Martin, the Nimrod is a must-have for any car collection.
